Ode to Odette

Ode to Odette
for Cinde from Ynot

There once was a dog and her name was Odette
she was a very fine friend
had a spot on her side in the shape of a heart
and gave us her love till the end

A pup from afar we don’t know the tale
of her dreams and her hopes and her fears
but when she would run through the wide open field
we knew she was glad she was here

Her muzzle was brave like a cattle dog true
you could see her with bulls and with cows
but the children all knew to not be afraid
for her growl was more show than a scowl

She could nip when irate the other dogs knew
that she had a good hold on her fate
but rolled out on the rug with paws by her nose
she looked both peaceful and great

First in the line, to young Jimmy made clear
she’d announce the pride of her place
but whence came the treats strips of chicken or beef
she’d share them with eminent grace

We’ll all miss her so, there’s no getting around
that the time without her will wear
but finding a place in the Leucadia ground
will take her back home now upstairs

She was dropped when too young
it was all Ynot’s fault
but she quivered and bounced with a yelp
on the steps by the beach traversing each one
some times with a little extra help

She loved a good rub with tummy exposed
when Adam would bend over to pet
rolled her eyes round and round and wiggled her nose
and licked at his hand—does so yet

In the middle of that night
a pale owl did appear
en route to the vet in the car
with Odette in the back, rolled up on a cot
content to look up at the stars

Oh the cowboys will sing a long song in her name
she’s still known on the Alice Springs plain
and when cattle are called, whistled in from afar
she’d bring them all home once again

_____

with additional verses by Cinde--

Oh Anthony sang a long song in her name
Odette will live on in our hearts,

She continues her run on the Alice Strings plain
Rounding cattle called home from afar.
Rejoicing and game, she will never be lame..

She will lie her self down in the beautiful place
And dream on of us, with a smile on her face
